🏓 WECAN Pickleball Club

One Court, Many Neighbors, One Shared Passion

If someone had told us just two months ago: "WECAN is about to have a Pickleball club with over 100 members," most people probably would have replied: "What's Pickleball? Is it some kind of pickle?" Yet only two months later, the WECAN Pickleball Club has grown from a small group of 20–30 players into a vibrant community of more than 100 members. Even more exciting, our members come not only from Wellesley and Dover, but also from neighboring towns including Sherborn, Weston, Newton, Waltham, Sharon, and beyond. A simple pickleball court has quietly become a bridge connecting neighbors, families, friendships, and communities.

Why Did We Start a Pickleball Club?

The answer is actually quite simple: People want to stay active—but not exhausted. They want exercise—but not injuries. They want to meet new friends—but not just sit around chatting. And that's where Pickleball comes in. The sport combines elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis, yet has developed a personality all its own. The court is smaller. The learning curve is friendly. The workout is just right. And most importantly—there is a lot of laughter. Balls fly out of bounds. People occasionally run to the wrong spot. Everyone laughs together. That may be Pickleball's greatest charm.

From 20 Players to More Than 100 in Just Two Months

To better understand our growing community, we conducted a simple member survey. The results were fascinating: The vast majority of members were complete beginners. A smaller group identified themselves as Advanced Beginners or Intermediate players. In other words, almost everyone started from the same starting line. Some people were holding a pickleball paddle for the very first time. Some learned for the first time that the "Kitchen" isn't actually a place for cooking. And some discovered a surprising truth: "The softer you hit the ball, the better the shot can be!" With that shared sense of discovery, a welcoming and enthusiastic learning community was born.

Enter Coach Brad!

To help members learn the right fundamentals from the beginning, the club partnered with Brad, a dedicated Pickleball instructor from the Wellesley Recreation Department. Brad offered a two-week training program specifically designed for Beginners and Advanced Beginners.

Many participants initially thought: "I've played tennis." "I've played table tennis." "I've played badminton." "How hard can Pickleball be?" After the first few lessons, however, many quickly realized: quite different, actually. Although Pickleball looks simple, it has its own unique rules, strategies, and technical skills. Especially the famous: The Dink. When people first heard the term, many looked puzzled. After practicing it, they discovered that what appears to be a gentle little shot actually requires precise control of power, spin, and placement. Easy to learn. Very difficult to master. One member joked: "I used to win with strength. Now I need to win with strategy." Coach Brad nodded enthusiastically.

Why Is Everyone Falling in Love with Pickleball?

After a few weeks of play, members shared a common observation: It feels good. Really good. Compared to tennis, Pickleball requires less explosive power and less court coverage. It's easier on the body. Gentler on the joints. Yet still provides plenty of exercise. It's no surprise that Pickleball has become the fastest-growing sport in America, especially among active adults and seniors. That said, younger players are having just as much fun. Because regardless of age, everyone discovers the same thing: Losing can be fun. Winning is even more fun.

From Beginner to 2.5 in Record Time

After just three to four weeks of practice, many of our beginners have already advanced to the 2.5 level. Even more impressive is the enthusiasm. Members have begun organizing practice sessions on their own. The group chat starts constantly buzzing with messages: "Who's free tonight?" "Anyone want to play tomorrow?" "We're one player short—come join us!" Some members are now participating in organized practice sessions at least four times per week.

A second round of Advanced Beginner and Intermediate training programs is already being planned, and additional Beginner classes are also in development. Our goal is simple: Anyone who wants to learn Pickleball should be able to find a court, a coach, and a community.

As Skills Improve, Equipment Fever Begins

Of course, every sport eventually reaches a familiar stage: Equipment upgrades. In the beginning, paddles came in every imaginable variety: $30 paddles. $100 paddles. Professional paddles. Grace proudly showed up with a wooden paddle that cost exactly $1 (Actually, it was free—a limited-edition giveaway from Verizon.) Coach Brad looked at it. Paused. Then smiled and made a dramatic "throw it away" gesture. The entire court burst into laughter.

As players improved and compared their paddles with those used by coaches and experienced players, new conversations began: Carbon fiber? Honeycomb core? 16mm thickness? Thermoformed construction? The discussions gradually evolved from swing mechanics to paddle technology. Perhaps that's simply part of every athlete's journey. To be fair, though, pickleball paddles are rather unique-looking. Large face. Short handle. Some members have joked that they resemble the elegant hand fans carried by ancient Chinese ladies. Only now, the fan has been replaced by a pickleball paddle. The elegance remains unchanged. 😄

WECAN Pickleball Community Support Initiative

The purpose of the club has never been only about playing pickleball. Our larger mission is to help residents connect, support one another, stay healthy, and build friendships. Looking ahead, WECAN Pickleball Club plans to offer:

We hope that through sports we can: Help new residents integrate into the community more quickly. Help retirees maintain an active and healthy lifestyle. Help families discover shared interests. Help children build confidence and friendships. And help more people meet new friends through one small plastic ball.

Come Join Us!

Whether you are a complete beginner, new enthusiast, hidden expert, parent looking to play with your children, or a neighbor looking to make new friends — you are welcome here. Because at WECAN Pickleball Club, winning and losing are not the most important things. Having fun is. Every swing of the paddle has the potential to start a new friendship. And perhaps that is what community is all about.

🏓 See you on the courts!
